Lab Log Entry
Ori was babbling again.
I asked her to “write something about marketing” and what came back was a wall of text that felt like it was copied straight out of a textbook. Useless.
Then I tried again: “Write a short LinkedIn post, friendly tone, about how small businesses can use AI to save time on marketing.” Suddenly, Ori’s voice shifted. The post was clear, engaging, and shareable.
That’s when I realized: Ori isn’t messy. I am.
The clearer I am, the clearer she becomes.
What I Learned
The phrase “garbage in, garbage out” comes from early computing — if you put in bad data, you’ll get bad results. AI is no different.
When you give ChatGPT (or Ori) a vague prompt, the AI has millions of possible answers to choose from. It guesses — and the results feel generic, unfocused, or irrelevant.
But when you give a clear prompt, you constrain Ori’s options. Suddenly, she’s not guessing — she’s following a path.
Examples of Vague vs. Clear Prompts
- Vague Prompt:“Write about social media.”
- Output: Long, unfocused essay.
- Clear Prompt:“Write a 150-word social media post, in a fun and energetic tone, explaining why local restaurants should use Instagram Stories to promote daily specials.”
- Output: Specific, usable, on-brand content.
- Vague Prompt:“Explain finance.”
- Output: Overwhelming jargon.
- Clear Prompt:“Explain cash flow in simple terms, like I’m 15, with a bakery as the example.”
- Output: Accessible and practical.
👉 Prompt clarity = output clarity.
Applied SMB Use Case: Customer Support Emails
Imagine you run a small e-commerce shop. Customers email with questions about shipping.
- Vague Prompt:“Write a reply about shipping.”
- Ori gives a generic, cold response.
- Clear Prompt:
“Act as a friendly e-commerce shop owner. Write a 100-word email reply to a customer asking about delayed shipping. Be apologetic but reassuring. Offer a 10% discount code for their next order.”
Clear Output (Ori):
“Hi Sarah, thanks for your patience! Your order is on its way but running a bit late — it should arrive within the next 3 days. We know delays are frustrating, so here’s a 10% discount code for your next order: THANKYOU10. We appreciate your support!”
That’s not just an email. That’s customer service — powered by prompt clarity.
Closing Reflection
Ori isn’t confused. She’s just literal.
If I don’t tell her what I want, she’ll give me what she thinks I mean.
Clarity isn’t optional. It’s the difference between noise and value. Between babble and brilliance.
And tomorrow, Ori learns her next trick: how to play roles.
